Immigration processes have 2 phases

1
Obtaining a visa at the consulate
This is the first stage and must be applied for in a country where the expatriate is legally resident. It lasts 4 months and entitles you to 2 entries into Portugal.
2
Obtaining a residence permit
During the 4 months of the visa you will apply for a residence permit at an interview with the immigration services. The residence card is valid for 2 years, renewable.

You need to have an employment contract, or a promise of a contract, with a Portuguese company before applying for a work visa

I've already got my visa! Can I start working?

Yes. Once you have your visa stamped in your passport, you can be hired immediately by your new company and start working.

Apart from the visa, do I need anything else to sign the employment contract?

You will usually need three more personal documents:

  1. A Portuguese tax number
  2. A bank account in Portugal
  3. Social security number (NISS)
With the visa, can I travel within the European Union or back to my country?

Not really. The visa only allows you to enter Portugal legally, and only entitles you to 2 entries, so you'll have to plan any trips.

I already have an approved visa. Is the immigration process over?

No. The visa is valid for 4 months and during this period you will apply to Portuguese immigration for a residence permit valid for 2 years.

Will New Way accompany me to the residence permit interview at AIMA?

Yes, he will be accompanied by a lawyer.
